Accustomed as we are... Most people enjoy a speech. They usually come after a good meal and a convivial drink, after seeing family and friends we haven't caught up with for ages, and at a point in proceedings when we can sit back, let our hair down, and enjoy the coming verbal treat in relaxed comfort. But there is one important exception... ...The person who has to write the speech and then stand up and deliver it! If you are unaccustomed to speaking in public this can be an ordeal by fire. It hangs over you like a thunderhead for weeks or even months in advance, and can be the cause of all sorts of nervous distress and sleepless nights. And of course, you cannot enjoy the occasion you have attended to deliver the speech, because of stage fright beforehand, and worry about how well it has gone down after.
